The streets of Lake Como

In the western part of Lake Como, the state road begins, also known as Regina, is said in honor of Queen Teodolinda, in reality it owes its name to the Latin adjective regia: so in fact were called by the Romans all the imperial streets, that is state.

According to research commissioned by Tom Tom, Route 340 ranked third among the most beautiful streets in Europe.

The streets of these places are winding, often narrow, scenic, through villages, not always tourists are aware of the place they are going to visit, finding themselves disoriented, on mountain roads difficult to travel for those not used to

Between Cernobbio and Brienno you can take, instead, the Vecchia Regina, the State Road 340, which crosses the villages perched on the initial basin of the Lake: the path sometimes narrow and winding passes through well-known lake countries, such as Cernobbio, Moltrasio, Laglio, until the exit Torriggia, rejoining the new road Regina, to continue towards Brienno, Argegno, Colonno, Sala Comacina, Ossuccio, Lenno, Mezzegra, Tremezzo and Griante.

Each bend is a surprise on the magnificent landscape, between lake and mountains, a unique and unforgettable experience

The landscape is characterized by mountains that slide into the lake, now soft and now restless; woods, small white pebble beaches, soft grass, some sandy and headlands bathed by placid waters.
Stone villages that look like postcards from the Middle Ages, Grand Hotels and fabulous villas, with manicured gardens and aristocratic atmospheres from Belle Epoque.

The shores of Lake Como, are a tourist destination frequented by at least two centuries, yet able to preserve a surprising number of authentic places, tiny villages and valleys to explore driving along winding roads.

Where to enjoy the journey beyond the destination

The whole part of Cernobbio overlooking the lake is a succession of villas built between the ‘400- as the nucleus of Villa Pizzo (now Volpi Bassani) – and ‘900 as Villa Bernasconi, designed in art nouveau style by Alfredo Campanini.

You can not forget the splendor of Villa d’Este, a sixteenth-century residence embellished with a beautiful Italian garden.

After the noble property, the villa was transformed into a luxury hotel in 1873.

You can then go up along the steep road full of curves and bottlenecks that in about 17 kilometers leads to Mount Bisbino, a balcony from which to admire beautiful views. On the top, at 1325 meters, crowned by a small sanctuary, the gaze sweeps over the lake, the mountains and the plain of Lombardy.
